Laura and Russ Karlins, a Naperville couple known for their unwavering dedication to helping individuals with developmental disabilities, have been named Marklund’s 2026 Friend of the Year. This prestigious award, presented annually by the nonprofit organization Marklund, recognizes extraordinary individuals and groups who go above and beyond in supporting the organization’s mission.
Marklund, which serves children and adults with profound developmental disabilities, has had a lasting impact on the Karlins’ lives since 2018. That year, Laura’s brother, Scott, became a resident at Marklund’s Hyde Center campus in Geneva. Since then, the Karlins have immersed themselves in the organization’s efforts, playing an integral role in its success. Their commitment to Marklund includes volunteering for various committees, actively participating in fundraising events, and organizing staff recognition initiatives. Laura has also contributed her leadership skills by serving on Marklund’s Board of Directors, further cementing her dedication to the cause.
“I’m truly grateful for this honor,” Laura said upon receiving the award. “Seeing the love and care Scott receives every day from the Marklund staff reminds us of how special this community is. Thank you to everyone at Marklund for making it such a beautiful place.”
Russ also shared his deep gratitude: “We are especially honored to be welcomed into such a remarkable group of supporters and advocates. Knowing Scott is in his forever home, surrounded by compassion, dignity, and expert care, is a gift beyond measure. Our family is truly blessed.”
The Friend of the Year award, first presented in 1979, acknowledges those who have shown exceptional dedication to improving the lives of Marklund residents. The recipients of this award have demonstrated an unmatched willingness to serve Marklund’s residents in ways that significantly impact their lives – both now and in the future.
Marklund operates several facilities across the Chicago suburbs, including locations in Geneva, Bloomingdale, and Elgin, and provides residential, educational, and day services to over 300 residents and clients. The organization’s dedication to helping individuals with developmental disabilities extends beyond just caregiving; it is a community of support where residents are treated with the utmost dignity and respect.
